We decided to incorporate our words into a Painting Demonstration in under 7 minutes. Each of us used the adjectives in various abstracted forms to create this….With house paint, brushes, glitter, sponges, and various objects, we utilized the different forms of the line to create our version of the line. Heavy, abstract, frustrated, spontaneous, messy, and incoherent. This is our Line. This is the Line.

On the line.

Line.

My final project consisted of a painting of the line on a rectangular canvas portraying the 1 mile long, 5 ft. wide Line, detailed, With a transparent sheet on top indicating my every day path and how it intersects the line. I concluded that I should show how the line affects my everyday path incorporating my word…

Using the word in its literal sense… hunting for a compilation of objects of various round/circular shapes.

These words will enable us to see things in the line that may go unnoticed by everyday viewers, they will help us explore, invent, and learn. Round…The Line.

Professors:

We made a large map of a territory spanning from this University, through woods and forest, a little bit of personal property, and even the State University adjacent to this one. You Students will get a small portion of this larger map, get a small group together, and explore this territory…marking it for an even larger class hike through the “line”.

Me:

Great Start, okay… let’s do this thing?

Arrival…around 5:30 pm (Alfred State)

About 5 minutes into arrival a car drives up with a student sticking out…my first impression, this guy is outside his window in an awkward manner because he is either throwing shit…or yelling shit…possibly both?

turn my body at a 40 degree angle to see a furry leg sticking out from the back end of the car.

“Anybody HUNGRY!”, this random State kid quizzically states, grin on his face.

I realize then that a deer is strapped to the rear end of the car, leg exposing blood, fleshy matter, a dead thing.

Doe. Mother perhaps? Fending for her young before a bitter winter.

Students. Hicks perhaps? Turning this mother into some form of edible material.

…and they have a taco bell.

-This was the beginning of the line. It really started before we got to State, It stated when we were forced into groups in the beginning of the year, given projects with a due date, 8 am, studio…

breaking a pattern of sleepless nights getting foundations done is difficult.

October…already? Line assignment. 1 mile long, 5 feet wide. I don’t help navigate…I’m not a leader. Duct-tape to mark our presence. Project semi done. I find a wrench and loose change.

Tuesday Morning: Hiking was an enjoyable experience. I now know why I brought that apple. Creeks are the most enjoyable thing to pass through. I don’t care if my shoes get wet but attempting to figure out with logic the best possible way to get from one stone to the next reminds me a lot of playing “don’t touch the lava!…(aka, gravel)” on the playground equipment as a kid.

The Line.

Mangled and Ancient.

Years ago  they lived with you.

Years more will pass and they will know, We Were Here.

How to get here…(Near the green monster, over behind the Performing Arts Building). Start your trek by walking the beginning of the green monster, and watch on the right for a tiny four step walk that takes you East, right along the row of pillars behind the Miller Performing Arts Building. Keep walking until you see cement stair-like bleachers imbedded in the ground on the left. These steps are surround by flora and fauna and are cold to the touch. Directly in front of you should be the Stadium.

1. The ground is soft, but the moisture from recent rain is absorbed deeper in the ground.

2. The sun is West of me, casting shade and rays of sunlight through various leaves and branches.

3. The temperature has dropped a bit since I’ve been here, causing my fingers to become cold and numb while I type.

4. There is a Keystone Carton East of me.

5. College Kids prefer Keystone Light.

6. I can hear skateboards, music, and a crow-like bird in the distance. Yelling from students echo around Freshman Dorms.

7. It feels like October, yet smells like November. The scent of dead leaves and dirt linger in the air.

8. A small leaf bug just flew by my head, I’m going to try and get a focused picture of the little guy.

9. Students walk by, gravel crunching under their UGG boots.

10. When gusts of wind come through the leaves left on various trees make a rustling noise. It has a calming effect.

11. Plane just passed through South of me.

12. Car alarm just set off ………………… someone needs to attend to that.

13. As the Sun gets lower in the sky, the amount of sunlight on me is limited, causing the temperature to feel even cooler than a few minutes ago.

14. Gloves would have been a good idea. Typing is feeling more strenuous.

15. Bells are tolling to signal the time. They sound like they are asking a question and receiving an answer. 5 pm?

16. The trees in the distance look mangled and ancient.

17. The leaves on these trees are shaped like little yellow-orange pea pods, and they shoot up in the air.

18. On the ground a tiny bug scurries around…he looks very confused.

19. My head is throbbing from the combination of cold, inability to figure out 50 things to type, and the list of things on my to-do list the keep piling up.

20. We have reached 20! … Lets see … The cool air keeps blowing free strands of hair in my face, which at first annoyed me but after just letting it pass over me gives me a sense of peacefulness. Something that would be more enjoyed if it weren’t so damn cold right now.

22. Gloves are now in possession! (It is much later, Ade seemed like a good idea at the time).

24. Behind me is a door…a green EXIT sign emits an eerie glow.

25. On the glass of the door I notice further that there is a small black spot. Upon further analysis I have realized that it is in fact a slug. I’ll tell him something positive in hopes that symbiosis and our mutual respect for each other will be enough to negate some arrogance of the human race.

26. My coffee is cold, no longer warming the digits that sprout from my poor excuse for a pair of gloves.

27. I scour the ground for change and find a penny in the dirt. 1987. The year my older brother was born.

28. Eventually I’ll conclude this is a sign that I should possibly call him. Maybe….probably not.

29. The pillars of strong brick are massive and yell stability. The dirt beneath them will last much longer but is comprised of much smaller elements, all together forming one unit of definition. Earth. Soil. Dirt. Ground.

30. Light is being emitted from the houses in the distance. I wish I were inside them.

31. Yelling in the distance.

32. The night sky is slightly cloudy with a mid-crescent moon and some very vivid stars.

33. Little bottles and package wrappers sit near my feet. Apparently this site is popular with the locals.

34. No Keystone Light?!

35. A puddle of questionable liquid sits at the side of my other foot. I think it is soda……hopefully.

36. Echoing laughter in the distance. Midnight anyone?

37. We made it to 37? Really? Wow…well….in that case…

38. ^That probably doesn’t count so I’ll make it up. I swear! Okay…snail, he is doing fine. I think it is a he anyway. No determinate qualities that I would use, or want to use in that matter, to figure out that answer to this question. He is dark from a distance but closer up I can see the trail of sticky goo that he emitted in order to reach such a high place up on the glass door. He is moving up in the world, (and anywhere away from a sidewalk is an improvement). Smart Guy.

39. Hat is now ON! The fibers stitched together in a nice little pattern make me think of looking closely at line pattern in this environment.

40. A large thick orange cord runs near my right side and into the construction site.

41. The windows on top of the Miller Performing Arts Building are illuminated.

42. Silence lasts for awhile out here…away from the Freshman Dorms, secluded to an extent. It is peaceful. I use this place for this and many other reasons.

43. Rocks are piled up in various locations, some thrown and others stacked. They vary in textures, shapes, sizes, and color. Deep gray and warm neutral tones. Cool to the touch. I think ill take a little one home.

44. Skunks are scurrying around in the distance. Foraging for food is a nice alliteration as well.

45.  The lights in the windows of the homes are mostly out. Bed time.

46. Incandescence pops in my head looking at the night sky. The moon is more than stark white. It is blue, gold, hot pink, sea foam green, and canary yellow. I would love to capture this in a photograph…but this is why the internet exists.

47. Clouds form interesting wispy patters, with the detail shaped by the light reflected from the Moon. I think I see a face. If you pay attention there is always a face of some sort.

48. The detail of everything is depleted with the lack of light being reflected. Shapes, textures, colors, and distance morph into one large body. It fuzzes and forms into a single indeterminate entity.

49. The prospect of being indoors is very exciting. I will contain my enthusiasm by marking down two more statements about my surrounds…I can evaluate the leaves, seeing as this is a pretty remote location and not much has changed since arrival besides the temperature, my ability to spell, and the location of the sun and moon. Each flower, leaf, or weed that I look at gives me a different emotion based on its physical characteristics. The tall, dense looking leaves give a sense of stability and strength, while the tiny buds on a stem send the message vulnerable, beautiful, delicate. Sharp pricker-bush forms seem to give off a very DO NOT TOUCH, vibe (which is a great self-preservation mechanism).

50. As I’m packing up to leave I notice the gravel that is displaced by my arrival, presence, and departure. Shallow pools and little mounds make it look like a geographical map of sorts. This is where I set down my bag, and over here my foot kicked up a little mound while sitting down. They don’t seem to affected beside the slight indents left by my occupation. I could be very deep about this fact, tie it to our presence in the world, but it is dark, cold, and I am READY to follow the majority of the sleep loving population.

Informational Structure…

Other patterns include; Bricks, Fencing near construction site, Gravel, Wall Adjacent to pillars, Texture on Stones, Leaves, Bottom of stair case on the way to Personal Territory.

4. It is unusually warm, and smells like Kale.

5. Little buds, grains of soil, and pieces of leaves litter the desk.

6. Pennies…everywhere.

7. Cactus needs attending to.

8. Half-empty lighter is hiding behind trash can.

9. Baby bug flying around fluorescent light. Bee perhaps?

10. Row of tacks left in ceiling that I have yet to take out.
